Tip Calculator

Dinner with friends? Enter the bill, tap a tip percent (or set your own), split it — everyone sees their share. No awkward math at the table.

How it works

  1. Enter the bill total and how many people are splitting it.
  2. Tap a preset tip percent — or type your own.
  3. See the tip, the total and exactly what each person owes.

Worked example

$80 bill, 20% tip, split 4 ways: tip = $16 → total $96 → $24 per person. Done before the server comes back.

The math behind it

Tip = bill × percent ÷ 100. Total = bill + tip. Per person = total ÷ people. A quick mental shortcut: 20% is the bill divided by 5; 10% is moving the decimal one place.

Common mistakes

  • Tipping on the post-tax total vs pre-tax — either is fine, just be consistent.
  • Forgetting the tip on delivery apps' service fees.
  • Splitting evenly when one person ordered way more than everyone else.
  • Not checking whether gratuity is already included (common for parties of 6+).

Frequently asked questions

What's a standard tip in the US?

15–20% at sit-down restaurants, 20%+ for great service. Bars: $1–2 per drink. Delivery: 15–20%.

Do I tip on the tax?

Most people tip on the pre-tax subtotal — that's the traditional approach, and it's completely acceptable.

How do we split fairly?

Even split is simplest and fine for similar orders. For big differences, total each person's items plus their share of tax and tip.

Should I tip for takeout?

Not required, but 10% is a kind gesture for the staff who packed it. Delivery drivers should get 15–20% like dine-in.

What if the service was bad?

Tip less if it was truly the server's fault — but tell a manager too. Stiffing the server rarely fixes a kitchen problem.
